Speed up/Cancelling a "stuck" Ethereum transaction in TrustVault Web

WARNING:

  • Transactions that involve the creation of contracts cannot be cancelled or expedited.
  • Replacing transactions can lead to significant repercussions. We highly recommend that all users choose the "FAST" transaction speed option through the API, iOS app, or TrustVault Web. If you do not follow this advice, you may risk having your transactions become stuck.

How to Speed Up or Cancel a Transaction in TrustVault Web

  • Begin by navigating to TrustVault Web at https://app.bitpandacustody.com.
  • Once there, select the wallet that contains the transaction that is currently stuck.
  • After selecting the wallet, locate and click on the icon that allows you to speed up or cancel the transaction.
  • A new modal box will appear on the screen.

  • Click the link that directs you to Etherscan to display any pending transactions. This action will open a new browser window.
    • If you do not see any pending transactions, it could mean that you have selected the wrong sub-wallet or that the transaction has already been mined.
    • Be sure to check which specific transaction you wish to speed up and copy the pending transaction hash.
  • Paste the copied transaction hash back into the TrustVault Web interface.
  • TrustVault Web will then validate the transaction hash and provide you with the option to either "Speed Up" or "Cancel" the transaction.

    • Below, you will find explanations of what each option means.
  • Choose a new gas price for the transaction.
    • Please note that the new gas price must be set higher than the existing gas price; otherwise, the network will reject the new transaction.
  • After setting the new gas price, you can either click "Preview" to review the transaction details or select "Send Immediately" to send the transaction to your device(s) for signing.
  • Ensure that all necessary phones are checked for signing and re-signing the transaction.
  • If the transaction is priced correctly, the network will accept it, and it should be mined within a few minutes.

"Speed Up" vs "Cancelled"

When you choose to speed up a transaction, it means you are essentially re-executing the same transaction but with an increased fee paid to miners. This adjustment allows for the transaction to be processed and mined much more quickly.

TrustVault will recreate the original transaction but will simply adjust the gas price to the new desired amount.

On the other hand, cancelling a transaction involves creating a new transaction that transfers zero value (Ether) back to the originating account. This action effectively results in no movement of funds or assets, but it does serve to remove the pending transaction from the network.

FAQ

  • Will this transaction replace the existing transaction?
    • Yes, if the new transaction is priced correctly, the network will disregard the old transaction and accept the new one.
  • Will Etherscan show the new transaction?
    • Yes, if the new transaction is priced correctly, it will be displayed on Etherscan. However, it may take a few minutes for Etherscan to reflect the new transaction, and it will often label the old one as "Replaced."
  • Will the old transaction and the new transaction have the same hash?
    • No, the new transaction will have a different hash, so make sure to select the correct transaction from Etherscan.
  • What happens to the old transaction?
    • The old transaction is replaced and discarded by the network.
  • Could my new transaction get "stuck" too?
    • Yes, if the new transaction is priced incorrectly or if network fees rise unexpectedly, it is possible for the new transaction to also become stuck.
  • Can I reprice more than once?
    • Yes, you can continue to reprice or cancel the transaction until the transaction with the same transaction count (or nonce) has been mined.
